This was posted by TaoBkk in year 2006. The photos are amazingly still on the old forum. Below is the original post:
    Problem
The water in my pond is clear but still have some tiny foam floating around. You can see it in the picture:

The tiny foam is from the air bubble, water flow from the FOK pump and also from my bekki shower (DIY).

After reading a book related to foam fractionator, the new idea was coming out. The question is how to separate the foam before it flows to the pond?

Pls. see my original 1st tray of bekki In the tray, I put filtermat in it

I took all JFM in the 1st tray out. You can see that the water level is at the outflow pipe. So that the bubble (or foam) can be escape from the tray.

I stole 2 furture board sheets from my daugter! Not so sure, it is called "future board" in other countries. Pls. see the photo. It is similar to card board. Instead of made of paper, it is made of plastic.

I cut the corner to avoid the leg of the upper tray.

The rectangular cuts are for the water flow to the other side.

Then, bubbles can not escape from the bekki.

The rectangular cut should be under the water level. See the pic.

Before cut the rectangular shape, you better try the sheet without cut first and then mark it. Then cut!

The water can flow to the cut but bubble or foam can not!

It's DONE! Such a low tech ha?

After running around 3-4 hours (depend on your pond dirty), I got some foam! Looks like beer foam! It was stuck at the corner of the tray!

Now issue arose again, how to take the foam out?

At first stage, I drill a hole putting outlet pipe with valve at the water level. I turned on the valve. But the foam was still there! Doesn't work!

At the end, low tech again, using small net (gold fish net) to take foam out!

    And it works!

Hi thanks for bringing this post up. Actually I noticed the same in my pond as well. Allow me to share. Whenever i increase the salt level in the pond I will get bubbles on the sufrace of the pond and it will join and become foam especially around my skimmer area.

After a long while it will go off, I think it's because of new water going in and thus redcuing the salt level eventually.

Wonder other sifus here encountered this. Any fix ?

Normally when the water thickens you will see small and big bubbles difficulties to burst.
That's why when we add a lot of salt, we will see a lot of foam on the surface of the water.......

Thanks Bro Shukri. I see I have much to learn. Could you share more on water thickness trying to understand what causes this. Is it due to not frequent new water change ?

    Hi Siva,
When there is increase in DOC, TDS, a lot of feeding and non frequent water change will cause the water to thicken........ When the water is thick, the water flow rather slowly.
When refresh powder being added to the water, it will kind of reduce the fluidicity of the water....... Compare a glass of water to a glass of tea tarik!!! :-D

Interesting method to capture the foam

My 2 cents and low cost method to handle foam:

I have heavy air blow in pond and filter chamber.

All foam accumulated in surface skimmer chamber. In this chamber I have overflow pipe and water top up. In this chamber, I put one air stone at opposite of overflow pipe. As the result, all the foam pushed to the overflow pipe. :-D
