We express our thanks to Dato Lee & Mr Peter for sharing their lovely ponds and interesting koi keeping journey.

    (A) DATO' LEE'S

Our members were indeed in awe seeing not just one or two Jumbos in Dato Lee's Pond but a whole herd of beautiful Jumbos! Koi kichis will appreciate that it is really an amazing achievement. Some of the kois that caught our attention the Showa, Kohaku and sanke from Oomo, Takigawa, Marushyo, and Oishi. Why? We thought they were the Sakais Dainichi because their bodies were amazing. This was the first revelation. You dont need to buy Sakai to get Sakai nor Dainichi to get Dainichi because many breeders are using Sakais and Dainichis to breed their brood. You pay a lot less for great kois. But nevertheless we were in disbelieve the price of a jump at you jumbo Sakai Sanke.

Dato Lee shared his success as follows:

    (1) Choosing the right kois with the body structure to grow big and to carry the growth.

    (2) A good koi is not necessarily the expensive koi. He has purchased many good pieces at very reasonable prices. One need to cultivate a good relationship with the breeders by becoming friends and appreciating their work. Most of all be patient; there is always another great koi out there. Tell the breeder how much you like the koi, discuss the merits instead of pointing out the demerits. Have trust in them and let them know what you can afford. By adopting this attitude, Dato Lee says he has been surprised a few times by what kois has been offered him.

    (3) Feed the kois well but the key is to maintain good water quality. Your kois will respond. If they can talk, they will tell you they are a happy and contented lot.

    (4) Dato's 180 tons pond has 4 air rings for aeration, water is fed into 2 bead filters to rid of solid waste before entering the bio filtration chambers of brushes and mats. Filter system holds 50 tons of water.

The whole system is automatically flushed twice a day and 10 tons of fresh water is trickled in to replace.

With the clever use of trees planted to provide shade and sight, water temperature is maintained at 25~26 degrees at the deepest end.

Most of all, we got to share Dato lee's life philosophy. Be humble, learn to say the 2 most important words: Please and Thank You,

Once again thank you Dato Lee for a most enjoyable guided tour of your amazing house!

Here is the second part of the pond visit to Peter Yeoh's residence. Although Peter has a small 15 ton pond, he is one of those few hobbyists who has the koi keeping skills to nurture a small koi into jumbo size. This is the pond shown below.
    www.koianswers.com/discussion/download/13940/DSC_7925.JPG

Between the 2 unit of houses, he had built a pavilion surrounded with another shallow koi pond in the open space for small koi as shown below.
