Saw the female Sakuma Showa being chased by 3 males in the main pond, so decided to try and breed it. Chronological list of events, steps taken, photos and videos below :

24/3/2014, 6pm - Took out the female and put her into the canvas tank with about 1 ton of water. Spawning materials made out of cut up orchid netting and tied to the canvas tank rim.

25/3/2014, 6pm - Did a 50% water change and introduced the male sanke. Left a yellow porch light on to mimic moonlight as apparently they're stimulated by water change and moonlight.

26/3/2014, 6am - Spawning completed and eggs were all over the place (brownish stuff you see at the bottom of the canvas tank floor) including the top net cover (must have been a wild night :-)) ). Surface skimmed the foam and removed the male. Added Ammonia blocker as a precaution. Female continued to be left in the canvas tank for her to recover till about lunch time.

26/3/2014, 1pm - Removed female showa, changed 50% water and dose S1 as prevention against fungus infecting the eggs. Every single dot you see in the photos is an egg. So so many #:-s

27/3/2014, 8am - Fertilized eggs are starting to develop.

    27/3/2014, 1pm - 50% water change

27/3/2014, 630pm - 50% water change. Little baby kois developing inside eggs as per attached photo while fungus can be seen forming on unfertilized eggs.

28/3/2014, 5am - 90% water change. Looks like majority of the eggs were not fertilized especially the bulk on the canvas tank floor. Guess this is expected for 1st timers and also due to the fact that I only used 1 male instead of 3 or more.

28/3/2014, 9pm - First few fries are free swimming! Looks like it only took 2.5days for the eggs to hatch under the current hot temperature with the canvas tank water temp at around 29-30C.

29/3/2014, 9am - Transfer fries over to a smaller tub as there were less than 30. Rest of the eggs were rotting so I cleaned out the canvas tank.

29/3/2014, 6pm - Some fries have started to swim about. Should be able to feed lightly tomorrow.

30/3/2014, 9am - Majority of the fries still haven't started swimming about. Guess they're still on their sac. Fed some egg yolk to those that were swimming about. 10% water change. Fries short of 1cm.

    31/3/2014 - Fed the fries 4 times today : 7am, 12 noon, 4pm and 8pm. 10% water change.

1/4/2014 - Fries Day 4. Fed at 8am and 12 noon. 10% water change. Baby fries are definitely eating the egg yolk as their whole transparent body will turn yellowish :)

    1/4/2014 - Fed at 430pm and 10% water change.

2/4/2014, 8am, 12 noon and 5.30pm - Fed and change 10% water. Will start to introduce blended growth pellets before full switch.

3/4/2014 till current - 3x a day feeding with 10-20% water change. Started to add crushed pellets for food.

    To be continued...

    Hi Kevin,

    Congratulation on the successful spawning!

It will be good just to leave the newly hatch koi fry in the original tank as they are very sensitive.

You can actually feed them with artemia but egg yolk will still do the job.

Just my 2 cents opinion to share.

Cheers and have a fun time raising the baby koi.
